What are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are different from other forms of tooth restoration in the sense that they replace an entire missing tooth’s structure, from root to crown. An implant consists of a titanium post that is surgically placed into the jawbone, where it fuses with the bone to create a secure foundation. Once healed, a custom crown, bridge, or denture is attached in order to restore oral function and appearance, and unlike traditional options, these new teeth will receive outstanding support from the implant posts below.

The 4-Step Dental Implant Process

  • Initial Dental Implant Consultation – The first step of the process is meeting with our team for a consultation to determine if you can receive dental implants. Patients must be in decent oral health and have enough jawbone density to accommodate the implant posts.
  • Dental Implant Surgery – After we’ve cleared you for dental implants, we can begin planning your procedure. Dr. Reusser can place dental implants right here in our office; it usually takes between 30 minutes and an hour to place a single dental implant, with multi-implant procedures taking longer.
  • Dental Implant Osseointegration/Abutment – Once the posts are in place, over the next several months, they will heal and fuse with your jawbone, becoming replacement tooth roots that are sturdy enough to support your future replacement teeth. After they’ve healed, you’ll return for a smaller, second procedure to receive your abutments, which connect your implants to your restoration.
  • Delivery of Dental Implant Restoration(s) – Finally, it’s time to receive your custom-made replacement teeth. Depending on your tooth loss, either a denture, bridge, or crown is attached to the abutments that were placed on top of your posts. After checking that everything looks and feels as it should, you’re all set to enjoy the benefits of your new smile!

Benefits of Dental Implants

Dental implants offer numerous benefits that make them one of the most effective and long-lasting tooth replacement options available. Some key benefits include:

  • They can prevent additional jawbone deterioration caused by tooth loss.
  • They restore a patient’s bite force and allow for a more varied diet.
  • They help to keep any remaining natural teeth properly aligned.
  • They can replace any number of missing teeth, no matter where they were located.
  • With the right care, they have the potential to last decades or even a lifetime.
